O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. The judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were stunned at this, and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa, who had the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performances were always top-quality that he didn't fall in the top 3. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it to the final two in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
