O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were horrified by this, and told the audience they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
