O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. She made it to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performances. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were shocked at this, and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the third place in the future. Her performance on September 7 in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
